After a snow-filled winter (and spring) in Appleton, Wis., construction of the new Campus Center at Lawrence University is back in full force. Workers are currently laying rebar and pouring concrete for the floors and exterior building walls for the first and second floors. When complete, the four-level, 110,000 sf campus center will help invigorate the university's campus and neighborhood communities. Check out Lawrence University's campus center website for a blog by Lynn Hagee, Lawrence University Campus Center Project Coordinator and construction photos updated every three minutes.

On Apr. 19, KSS Architects joined nearly 2,000 runners in the 12th Annual Jersey Shore Relay marathon from Seaside Heights to Asbury Park, N.J. The Jersey Shore Running Club sponsored the Saturday morning race, which raised more than $50,000 to benefit the Special Olympics. It was a great day for our two teams, the Flying Buttresses and Redliners II, both captained by intern architect Danielle Matuch. The teams comprised mainly KSS employees from the Princeton and Philadelphia offices, as well as a few friends and relatives. KSS' Matuch, Sheila Nall and Tom Johnson ran in the Flying Buttresses along with Nick Galac and Angelique Gallucci. KSS' Carrie Zahradnik, Kimberly Morris, Matthew McChesney and Brian Rebuck ran on the Redliners II team with Annie Corcoran.

The Flying Buttresses ran the 26.2 mile course in 3:27:45.2 (3 hours, 27 minutes, and 45.2 seconds), finishing 81st out of 398 teams. The Redliners II ran the course in 3:33:05.9 and finished 110th out of 398 teams. The day was sunny and warm with the occasional ocean breeze, a great day to run the course, which traced the shore and include stretches on the boardwalk, in residential neighborhoods, and on roads.

The 45th Annual New Jersey Concrete Awards Committee has honored iPort 12 in Carteret, N.J., with the Merit Award in the Warehouse category. The awards are sponsored by New Jersey Chapter American Concrete Institute and New Jersey Concrete & Aggregate Association. Panattoni Development Corporation, the project developer and owner along with P/A Associates, nominated the project for the award.

KSS designed iPort 12 to be a bold and iconic structure. With the sunlight and shadows offered by the site's orientation, iPort 12's building envelope comprises simple, breathtaking concrete planes of texture. Smooth surfaces contrast with ribbed planes, and vertical concrete fins that punch out from the facade and roofline add another dimension to the building.

The Annual New Jersey Concrete Awards Dinner will be held on Thursday, May 8, at The Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, N.J.

metroGREEN+Business interviewed KSS partner Ed Klimek, AIA on his expertise on sustainable design for industrial buildings. In 2006-07, KSS Architects and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties conducted a study on how to build green when existing LEED guidelines don't yet apply to large-scale industrial building types such as distribution centers. Because more retailers and corporations are recognizing the environmental and economic values of building sustainably, the demand for green industrial buildings is growing.

The study was funded by a grant from the NAIOP Research Foundation.

In a Mar. 25 public forum, KSS Architects presented the preliminary renovation plans for Cornell University's Statler Hall, which houses the university's acclaimed School of Hotel Administration. The renovation would transform existing, underutilized interior space into much needed programmatic spaces, including classrooms and offices. A new facade will change the existing exterior limestone into a highly visible and engaging multilevel space. Cornell envisions the renovations will foster its goal to "build bridges" between the hotel school and its campus by bringing students together from multiple disciplines, and advance the innovative, entrepreneurial spirit that is at the heart of the hotel school.

KSS also designed the 2004 addition to Cornell's Beck Center, which is connected to the Statler Center. The forum was covered by the university's newspaper The Cornell Daily Sun.

KSS partner Ed Klimek is leading a panel discussion on sustainable design for large-scale industrial buildings and distribution centers at the National Association of Industrial & Office Properties' Industrial Conference, Apr. 2-3 in East Rutherford, N.J. KSS Architects has worked extensively with NAIOP to develop sustainable design practices for the commercial and industrial market based on the United States Green Building Council's existing LEED guidelines. At the conference, Ed will be discussing specific examples of KSS' work in designing green distribution centers and the firm's role in "greening" the commercial and industrial market. Read more about his presentation here.
