KSS intern architect Alicia Weaver recently scored a big win in AIA Central NJ's annual poster contest. "Are You Green Yet?" was the theme for the 2009 Continuing Education Poster Contest. The poster promotes the organization's event schedule for continuing ed programs and included several graphic requirements. Weaver's poster took second place and features a cityscape mirrored by a skyscape comprising trees. Her entry and the other winning entries will be posted on AIA's Central NJ website. Congratulations, Alicia!

KSS team members celebrated the holiday season with a party at Le Castagne Ristorante, Philadelphia. Nearly every team member in KSS' Philadelphia and Princeton attended the event, which included dinner and dancing and has been an annual tradition. The party was an opportunity for members of both offices, particularly the newer staff, to meet, sit down and talk to each other. Allan Kehrt, FAIA, thanked everyone for coming together this year. This year is the firm's 25th anniversary, and for one night, everyone momentarily forgot about looming project deadlines and the state of the economy.

Andrew Tucker, AIA, LEED AP, joined about 30,000 architects, engineers, designers, scientists and product manufacturers in downtown Boston for the 2008 Greenbuild International Conference and Expo, one of the most anticipated conferences this year. In its inaugural year six years ago, Greenbuild 2002 had just 4,200 attendees. The remarkable jump in attendance is another indicator of how quickly sustainable, environmentally responsible design is becoming not only an even more desirable market and research area, but also an everyday practice for all architecture, engineering and planning firms.

Tucker, KSS' newly appointed Director of Sustainable Design, returned from the conference more informed, experienced and excited about the latest in green design than before. "It was a huge learning experience," he said. Initially overwhelmed by the 100-plus educational sessions available, he decided to attend a bootcamp on how to make design firms more "green" and a session on how to incorporate LEED requirements into project specifications. He also learned about the upcoming U.S. Green Building Council's LEED 2009 system that will revamp the current LEED rating system. Since he could attend one session at a time, Tucker purchased the conference proceedings to help him lead KSS to become an even more sustainable design firm.
