Two KSS teams were part of about 400 teams that raced in the 13th annual Jersey Shore Relay Marathon on Apr. 18. Organized by the Jersey Shore Running Club to benefit the Special Olympics, the race took teams of one to five members along the 26.2 mile course from Seaside Heights to Asbury Park, N.J. The sunshine and cool breezes made the weather nearly perfect for running. The event raised about $60,000, according to an Atlantic Highlands Herald article.

This is the second year KSS participated in the event. Intern architect Danielle Matuch captained both teams. Members of team KSS, which finished with a time of 3:50:12.4, were Angelique Galucci, Brian Rebuck, Sheila Nall, Wanda Lau and Alicia Weaver. Members of team KSS-Redliners, which finished with a time of 3:55:18.0, were Matuch, Scot Murdoch, Victoria Weaver, Michael Shatken and Steve Doyle.

After completing the marathon, the teams joined about 3,500 runners, walkers and volunteers at the Convention Hall for food, refreshments and music.

The New Jersey Business & Industry Association has named AMB Liberty Logistics Center a 2009 New Good Neighbor Award winner. KSS designed and master planned the project, which remediated and transformed a 9-acre site former pharmaceutical site covered with 30 abandoned buildings into a state-of-the-art Class A industrial distribution center with the potential to employ up to 200 workers in the Newark area. The judges selected the projects based on economic benefit, job creation, architectural merit, and community involvement. Stefan Pryor, Deputy Mayor for Economic Development for the City of Newark, formally submitted the nomination. NJBIA will recognize the project team at an awards luncheon on June 5.

In the first quarter of 2009, the jurors of AIA College of Fellows did more than elevate 112 members to the distinction of Fellow. They also appointed their new chairman: KSS' very own Allan Kehrt, FAIA. Effective immediately, Allan will chair the selection of the 2010 Fellows and perform other duties associated as chair of the jury during his one-year tenure. Jurors are elected to the College of Fellows by the membership and serve a three-year term. Allan will serve his last year on the jury as chairman. Congratulations, Allan!

The American Institute of Architects developed the Fellowship program to elevate architects with at least 10 years of membership who have contributed significantly to architecture and society and have achieved a standard of excellence in the profession on a national level, according to AIArchitect. Fewer than 2,765 members out of 86,000 AIA members, or about 3 percent, are recognized as fellows.

After three volunteer design firms created and presented conceptual designs to improve access to fresh food in urban neighborhoods, the Food Access initiative of Community Design Collaborative's Infill Philadelphia concluded with a publication launch party in late February. KSS Architects teamed with Chester's Community Grocery Co-Op to develop a new facility for the growing food cooperative in Chester, Pa. KSS established the Co-op's mission to 1) Expand access to produce; 2) Build a healthier Chester community; 3) Improve the sustainability of food access. Our proposed design would convert the multistory former furniture warehouse into an identifiable home for the CCGC that would establish its brand, integrate the new facility with the surrounding urban fabric, and provide an engaging shopping experience to its members.
