Never underestimate the importance of daylight. In the Sept. 28 NJBIZ article "Designs let tenants see light of day," KSS partner Edmund Klimek, AIA, talks about the invaluable--and free--resource nature has given us. The incorporation of natural light in building design has attracted greater attention and desirability with the growing awareness and emphasis on sustainability as well as technological developments in building and lighting systems.

The article discusses KSS' interior architecture design at 701 Carnegie Center, a new 4-story, 120,000 sf office building in Princeton, N.J. KSS worked closely with project manager Aegis Property Group, developer Boston Properties, and future tenant Princeton University to implement daylighting strategies throughout the building. Extensive use of windows, skylights and glass in hand rails and partition walls meant the project will likely achieve the U.S. Green Building Council's Daylight and Views credit, an challenging feat for a multistory, 120 ft deep commercial building.

On Sunday, Sept. 20, 5:30-10 p.m. EST, five firms representing the design team for The Learning Lab at WHYY in Philadelphia hosted the Corporate Challenge on WHYY TV 12 as part of the public broadcasting station's fall fundraising drive. Seventeen volunteers from the five firms answered phones and took pledges for the station.

Aegis Property Group, Bruce E. Brooks & Associates, Keast & Hood, KSS Architects, and Pennoni Associates are the engineers, architects, and property managers collaborating on the Learning Lab at WHYY, a new high tech learning environment for the nonprofit corporation. The Learning Lab will help teach individuals and the regional community how to tell their stories and express themselves through digital video, audio, and new media. In partnership with WHYY's many community partners, The Learning Lab will be integrated with and expand WHYY's existing Technology Center. Currently under construction, The Learning Lab is expected to be completed in May 2010.

Aegis' Timothy Calligan and KSS' David Zaiser, AIA, presented a check for $2,850, collectively contributed by the five firms, to WHYY President Bill Marrazzo.

KSS is thrilled to be involved in this project, which will benefit many people and community in Philadelphia and beyond. The project recently topped off its steel framing and continues to be in construction at full speed ahead.

In August, public broadcasting station WHYY topped off construction of its Learning Lab expansion. Students from the region signed the ceremonial beam that signifies the final and highest support member of the building's steel structure to be installed.

KSS is designing a new addition to WHYY's Learning Lab, which will be located along 7th St. in Philadelphia as an extension of WHYY's Technology Center. It will provided needed space for the community to learn how to share their ideas and stories through digital video, audio and new media. The addition will feature state-of-the-art technology throughout the space, which will include: the Lincoln Financial Digital Education Studio, a flexible performance and presentation space; a Digital Kitchen where students will brainstorm with digital video production equipment; and a "Portal" for community reception space and as a video gallery.
