Smart growth and New Urbanism principles are increasingly found in urban, mixed-use developments. As more planners embrace the town center model that combines residential, retail, and offices spaces, they often leave education out of the action. Schools can benefit urban development tremendously for many reasons, both economically and socially. And few can argue students add energy and fun to an atmosphere that can sometimes be too serious.
