Traditionally, many colleges and universities have viewed themselves as separate from the surrounding community, both physically and educationally. This approach has resulted in the antagonistic relationship associated with the phrase "town and gown," particularly in urban areas. With the demographic democratization of undergraduate and graduate study, some institutions of higher learning are adopting a new model of educational integration with their surrounding communities.
