New HQ creates place for people & product to connect

Burlington Stores sought to revitalize its image and its place in the off-price retail marketplace through the creation of a new corporate headquarters. A modern and dynamic workplace where brand is on display and where buyers, sellers, and designers can come together, the new three-story building fosters collaboration to connect people and product.

To determine the right floor plate for the selected site adjacent to Burlington’s existing offices, KSS explored the prototypical office building and developed a sequence of scenarios to meet Burlington’s corporate objectives. The selected scheme features two office volumes interconnected by an energetic public space. Expressed in a sweep of transparent glass, this public space contains a reception area, café, and coffee bar connected by a ribbon of Burlington red that reads prominently from the outside. The activity spills onto an outdoor  plaza that stretches along the entire length of the eastern wing, extending the corporate identity toward the street. The ground floor also contains vendor rooms, where garments are displayed, bought, and sold, and large meeting rooms to accommodate town hall presentations. The upstairs workplaces feature an open environment meant to mimic a studio-like atmosphere. Workspaces are punctuated by nooks for racked clothing where clothes and goods can be displayed and discussed. Employing informal meeting places and outdoor lunch spaces, avenues to walk and talk, and alcoves to think and solve, the design of Burlington’s new headquarters provides vibrant, functional space that supports its business operations while expressing its brand.
